A CAMPAIGN to promote the importance of water safety has reached nearly 20,000 kids across Barnsley and Bassetlaw.
BPL has been delivering Swim England’s Swim Safe campaign for the last 8 years; going into local schools across the communities we serve to educate young people about the importance of staying safe in the water.
This year, the team has delivered more sessions than ever before – reaching over 12,500 children in Barnsley and over 6,800 in Bassetlaw.
Development Manager at BPL Simon Ferrarelli said: “With over 230 water-related fatalities in the UK last year, it’s important as a charitable trust with the expertise of delivering safe water activities to ensure our local communities understand how to be safe around water.
“The campaign has been really good this year. We’ve been able to reinforce how to stay safe around the water in the summer months to nearly 20,000 pupils.”

KIDS across Barnsley have been enjoying the benefits of physical activity and healthy eating, thanks to a fun and engaging programme held at several BPL sites – with more sessions planned for the summer holidays.
The government funded holiday activities and food (HAF) programme provides healthy meals and activities to children from low income families during school holidays.
Past HAF sessions which have been delivered at BPL sites included the opportunity to try a variety of sports and activities from swimming to dodgeball, a hot meal at lunchtime, plus fun and educational interactive quizzes and board games.
Following BPL’s success with the programme over the Easter holidays, more sessions are planned for the summer at Dorothy Hyman Sports Centre, Royston and Hoyland Leisure Centres and the Metrodome.
30 HAF places are available at Hoyland Leisure Centre and 25 at the other sites and participants must receive free school meals to qualify for the scheme.
For those who don’t qualify for a free place, paid places are also available at Dorothy Hyman.
BPL’s Community Sports Development Officer Connor Pickles said: “We’ve had such positive feedback from the kids who have attended and their parents, as well as our staff who really enjoy delivering the programme, and we’re looking forward to the start of our summer holiday clubs later this month.
“Sessions like these really put BPL at the forefront of the community, so we can help people feel good and play a leading role in highlighting the benefits of sport, physical activity and healthy lifestyles in a fun and friendly environment.”

BPL swimming teacher Robert Blackburn is celebrating 10 years of charity fundraising – so far raising over £11,700 for causes close to his heart and recently receiving a special award.
Robert teaches, on average, around 450 pupils a week, ranging from babies right through to adults.
His charity work started back in 2013 when one of his friends was diagnosed with cancer and Robert decided to fundraise for Macmillan Cancer Support to say thank you for the help his friend had received.
He raised money by taking on a sponsored swim at the Metrodome; swimming a mile a day for three weeks, which is equivalent to the width of the English Channel.
Since then, he’s taken on a range of outdoor swimming challenges to raise money for charities including the Alzheimer’s Society, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Marie Curie and the neonatal unit at Barnsley Hospital – all causes which have helped him, his friends or family in some way.
Each time, he’s been supported by his loved ones, work colleagues, parents of the kids in his swimming lessons and local businesses, including sponsor Triple M Vehicles Ltd who have helped to cover his costs.
Robert said: “I can’t thank everyone enough. From the support I’ve had from BPL to the parents of the kids I’ve taught to swim and the businesses who have helped me raise sponsorship money.
“I wouldn’t be able to carry on with what I do, year in and year out, without them.”
Robert’s commitment to making a difference was recently recognised at the Proud of Barnsley Awards where he was presented with the trophy for Charity Fundraiser of the Year.
He added: “I loved the awards evening. It was nice to get the recognition, although I didn’t do it for that, and it felt brilliant to win.
“I didn’t expect it, so I was over the moon.”
Robert’s next challenge is taking on another outdoor swim at Derwent Water, as part of the Keswick Mountain Festival later this year, where he hopes to pass the £12,000 mark on his fundraising.
He added: “While I’m swimming, I’ve always got that person in my head who I’m doing it for.
“I won’t stop until I physically can’t do it anymore. I love it and I’m already looking forward to the next one.”
